What is a good subject for a mystery story?

A 17 year old boy wakes up one morning after a night of partying to find that his family is missing. His mother, father and two sisters have just vanished. Without a trace. He questions the neighbors. No one has seen anything. No one has heard any thing unusual. Their clothes are gone, everything pertaining to their very existence is gone. He has nowhere to turn. Except to the authorities........and he knows they can't be trusted.
