Would it take less space downloading from a website or disk?

It depends on the actual source. Sometimes a download from the internet can take up more space (but that is on a windows machine). On a mac, however, it should take up the same amount of space. The reason that burning crusade isn't loading may be a problem with the disk. Try downloading it from www.worldofwarcraft.com. That should help.
